Spicy Puffed Rice

“Spicy Puffed Rice?” I hear you saying, sure it sounds odd, but I’m a convert. It is a wonderfully tasty snack and best of all it is Ayurvedic! Your gut will love you; it is nourishing, easy to digest and full of medicinal herbs and spices to lovingly warm up your digestive fire and kick some Ama ass!!

Ingredients:
3 tablespoons of Ghee
1 teaspoon of mustard seeds
5 curry leaves
1 teaspoon of cumin seeds
1/4 teaspoon of asafoetida powder (found in indian grocers, it smells bad)
1/4 teaspoon of turmeric powder
2 cups of puffed brown rice (you can find this in the health food section of your supermarket)
salt to taste

Method:
In a large saucepan heat ghee on a medium setting. Add the mustard seeds and fry until they begin to pop. Take the pan off the heat and add the curry leaves (careful, the ghee may spit a little) and the cumin seeds.
Keep the pan off the heat, add the asafoetida and turmeric, then add the puffed rice and salt. Stir with a large wooden spoon until the mixture has lightly coated the rice.
Return to the heat and continue cooking, stirring regularly for about 2-3 minutes or until the puffed rices is lightly toasted and crunchy.
Pour into a bowl and eat!! I guarantee they won’t last long.
